People across the world are learning Mandarin Chinese (also called Zhōng-wén or Hàn-yǔ), the official and main language of China, and spoken in several countries of the Far East as well as Chinese-background communities globally.
This textbook is intended for English-speaking learners of Mandarin Chinese who start with little or no knowledge of the language. It is written to support self-learning or teachers and learners in a classroom situation where the emphasis is on developing fluent oral and listening skills. Learners who complete a course based on this book should attain lower intermediate level.
The book’s 18 lessons contain dialogue, vocabulary, example sentences, phrase patterns, over 70 audio examples, exercises and songs. A special appendix contains 60 pages of answers to exercises, grammar explanations, and an index to all the words in the lessons. Pinyin is used for writing Mandarin, and Chinese characters (simplified and traditional) are also included.
